WCSO raises concerns about cryptocurrency crimes

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says that cyber-scams increase by double during the holiday months, and right now there is a concerning scam occurring.

There is a scam where they are calling locals saying they need to pay a warrant charge to the Sheriff’s office. The phone number is cloned to look like the correct WCSO phone number, but it isn’t.

WCSO Detective Richard Spaulding tells us there are some reg flags to look out for to know if it is a scam:

Firstly, WCSO won’t call you to handle warrant charges, and they won’t ask you to stay on the phone for any bank withdrawals.

They will never ask you to use cryptocurrency to pay these warrants off.

They will not ask you to not drop off the money at the physical Sheriff’s office itself.
